Pick the destination by the failure you care about, not by how many gigabytes it holds. A card in the camera is cheapest and loses everything if the camera is stolen. A hub indoors survives that, at the cost of a second device and brand lock-in. A recorder is the only practical way to capture continuously across several cameras — Reolink’s PoE models support continuous, scheduled or motion recording to a card, an NVR or an FTP server. Capacity Is the Wrong Question
Most buyers approach storage as an arithmetic problem: how many days fit on how many gigabytes. That question has an answer — Reolink publishes roughly 48.5 hours of 4K on 128GB, 97.1 on 256GB and 194.2 on 512GB for one camera — but it is the second question, not the first.
The first question is which failure you are planning for. Every storage choice is secure against some things and useless against others, and the differences are categorical rather than incremental. A bigger card does not protect against the camera being stolen. A cloud subscription does not help if your internet is out at the moment something happens. A recorder in the garage does not survive a fire in the garage.

Notice that no row is strong everywhere. That is the actual finding: there is no correct answer, only a correct answer for a given house and a given worry. Most people end up with two destinations, and the sensible pairing is one local and one off-site.
The Failure Most People Do Not Plan For
A camera recording only to a card in its own housing has a specific weakness that is easy to state and easy to ignore: the evidence and the target are the same object. If somebody takes the camera off the wall, the footage of them doing it leaves with them.

- Keep at least one camera watching the others’ approach
- A card as a secondary copy is still worth having

The Failure the Cloud Introduces
Cloud storage genuinely solves the hardest problem: an off-site copy survives fire, flood and a thorough burglary in a way nothing in the house can. It also introduces a failure mode the other three do not have, and the evidence for that is a matter of public record rather than speculation.
The FTC’s May 2023 announcement of a proposed order against Ring described a company that failed to restrict employee and contractor access to customer videos, and that did not implement standard protections against credential stuffing and brute force attacks until 2019, with roughly 55,000 US customers’ accounts reached as a result. That is not an argument that cloud storage is unacceptable — it is an argument that choosing it means accepting a provider’s practices as part of your own security, and that the choice deserves a moment’s thought rather than a default. Adding a Destination Is Not Always Additive
Here is the trap that catches people who try to have everything. TP-Link documents that Tapo Care cloud storage cannot be used at the same time as NVR or microSD card recording, because Tapo cameras have a limited number of streams — and that if all three are active, NVR recording is disabled, with removing the card being the way to resume it.
So on at least one major brand, fitting a card to a camera that already records to a recorder silently stops the recorder. Nothing looks wrong afterwards. Before assuming two destinations means two copies, check what your specific camera says about running them together — the assumption is reasonable and, on some hardware, wrong.

What to Actually Do
For most homes, record locally to a hub or recorder indoors and treat the cloud as optional. That combination beats the alternatives on the two failures that actually happen: a camera being taken, and an internet connection dropping at the wrong moment. Local recording keeps working through both.
Add a cloud copy on top only if fire or a thorough burglary is a realistic concern for you, and go in knowing what you are accepting about the provider. Keep cards in the cameras as a secondary copy where the hardware allows it — but check first, because on some cameras a card and a recorder cannot both be active and adding one disables the other. What would change this advice entirely is renting with one or two indoor cameras, where a card in each camera is genuinely the right answer and everything else is over-engineering.

What happens to recordings if my internet goes down?
Cameras recording locally keep recording, because that happens on the device or on your own hardware. You lose live viewing and notifications until the connection returns. Cloud-only setups lose the footage as well as the alert.
Do I need a subscription to record footage?
No. Every major brand now supports recording to a card, a hub or a recorder without a plan. What a subscription buys is an off-site copy and, on some brands, smarter detection features.
