Most Blink guides answer the wrong question. They compare cameras. But once the hardware is on the wall, almost nothing about your daily experience of the Blink Home Monitor app is decided by which camera you bought. It is decided by two settings you probably chose without noticing, and by one interaction between them that catches people out months later, usually on the day they actually need a clip. Quick Answer
Clip storage depends on the Sync Module and whether the particular camera is covered by a plan or trial. With a supported USB drive in Sync Module 2, eligible cameras without coverage use Local Storage, viewable in the app. Covered cameras use cloud storage with a once-daily Clip Backup that you view on a computer. A Basic plan covers one camera; other eligible cameras can continue using Local Storage. Legacy devices and accounts have different cloud entitlements.
The Two Switches That Decide What the App Does
Blink sells three hubs and four plan tiers, and the app looks identical across all of them. The differences are invisible until something goes wrong. The Sync Module decides whether a local copy of a clip is even possible: Blink states plainly that the Sync Module Core supports neither Local Storage nor Clip Backup, and that legacy cameras (XT, XT2, first-generation Indoor) do not support them either. For eligible cameras, plan or trial coverage determines whether the removable-storage copy is Local Storage or Clip Backup.
Check coverage for each camera before buying a plan. A Basic plan covers one camera; other eligible cameras on the same system can continue using Local Storage.

Read the diagram’s subscription branch per camera: a Basic plan covers one camera, while other eligible cameras can use Local Storage. “Nothing is kept without a plan” assumes a current, non-legacy setup without other cloud entitlement; legacy devices and accounts differ. The storage table below applies these qualifications.
Adding a Sync Module and Your First Camera
The order matters more than the taps do. The Sync Module is the system; cameras join it, not the other way around. Blink also requires that every camera sits on the same Wi-Fi network as the Sync Module, which is the single most common reason a camera adds successfully indoors and then goes offline once it is mounted at the far end of the yard. If you have any doubt about coverage at the mounting point, test the signal where the camera will actually live before you drill, not after.
The Setup Order That Avoids a Rebuild

Put the drive in first
If you want local storage, insert the USB drive before you add cameras. Blink requires a Type-A drive, ideally exFAT, between 1 GB and 256 GB, with at least 375 MB free.

Add the Sync Module
The module claims the Wi-Fi network the whole system will use. Everything you add afterward inherits that network requirement.

Add each camera to that system
Cameras pair to the module, not to your phone. A camera added to the wrong system will not write to the right drive.

Verify the clip list, not the live view
A working live view proves nothing about storage. Trigger real motion and confirm the clip appears in the clip list, which is where locally stored clips show up.

Read the third and fourth rows per camera. An eligible camera without plan or trial coverage uses Local Storage. For a covered camera, the cloud stores the clips and supported removable storage provides once-daily Clip Backup, which is not viewable in the app. Subscribers who assumed the drive was a live second copy discover on the day of an incident that last night’s event is only in the cloud, and that the drive holds yesterday’s batch.
The honest read on the plan itself: it buys cloud retention, live view recording, Photo Capture, person and vehicle detection, and on the Plus tiers an extended warranty. That is a real feature set, and the same trade every camera brand now runs — we walked through the equivalent math for a competitor in our piece on whether a camera subscription earns its keep. For each covered camera, the removable-storage copy becomes Clip Backup; other eligible cameras can continue using Local Storage.
What the USB Drive Will Not Do
The most consequential limitation is one sentence in Blink’s Sync Module 2 documentation: the drive counts as full once it has less than 375 MB of free space remaining, at which point you are alerted and nothing more is written to it. That is not how a dashcam or a DVR behaves. There is no rolling loop, no oldest-first overwrite. Locally stored clips remain until you delete them or the drive is full, and a full drive is a stopped recorder until a human intervenes.
Local Storage Versus Clip Backup: Not the Same Thing

When you do go to the computer, the files are ordinary MP4s inside a folder named blink, sorted into year-and-month subfolders. Before pulling the drive out of the module, eject it from the app — tap the Sync Module status bar at the bottom of the camera list, then Local Storage, then Safely Eject. Yanking a drive mid-write is the cheapest way to lose the clip you went looking for.
Notification Settings That Actually Stop Nuisance Alerts
Blink gives you three motion controls, and people almost always reach for the wrong one first. Sensitivity is a blunt instrument: turn it down far enough to stop a swaying branch and you have also turned it down far enough to miss a person in dark clothing at the edge of the frame. Work through them in this order instead.

Retrigger time first
By default the camera records a five-second clip then waits 30 seconds before it will record motion again. That gap is adjustable from 10 to 60 seconds, and Blink names it as the setting for cameras that watch busy areas or produce false triggers.

Activity Zones second
Tap the rectangles covering the sidewalk, the road or the neighbor’s driveway. A selected area is grayed out and will not detect motion even when motion occurs, and zones are available on all Blink cameras.

Sensitivity last
Only after geometry and timing have failed. Blink lists lowering sensitivity among its remedies for a camera that is working too hard, but it costs you real detections as well as false ones.

Aim, then re-check
Half of all nuisance alerts are a framing problem, not a settings problem. Our

One honest limit on all of this: without a subscription, every filter you have is geometric. Zones control where the camera looks and retrigger controls how often it reacts, but nothing on your account judges what moved. Person and vehicle detection is a plan feature. A free Blink setup can be taught to ignore the street; it cannot be taught to ignore cats and still catch people.
What the App Will Not Do at Any Price
Three limits are structural. No plan removes them, and no setting works around them.
There is no continuous recording. Blink is event-driven by design, and the retrigger window is a documented dead zone in which the camera does not record motion events at all. Even at the shortest 10-second setting there is a gap after every clip. If you need a scrubable 24/7 timeline, you need a system built around a recorder and constant power — that is the whole premise behind the hub-based kits in our guide to wireless camera systems with local recorders, and it is a different product category, not a Blink setting.
Live View is not free. Blink names the volume of motion clips recorded and Live View usage as the causes of batteries depleting faster than expected, and its own remedy list is to reduce Live View, shorten clip length and lower sensitivity. In other words, the feature you would most want during an actual incident is the one the manufacturer tells you to ration. Mains power or a solar-charged camera changes that arithmetic more than any setting does.
Saving Live View depends on the model and account. For current, non-legacy setups, Live View recording is a plan feature. Legacy exceptions apply: XT2 can save Live View within its legacy cloud allowance. Check Blink’s legacy storage section for your device and account.
Shared Access: One Login, Total Control
Blink has no second user. There is no guest role, no view-only partner account, no per-camera permission. Everyone in the household signs in to the same account, and Blink states outright that anyone signed in to your Blink account can view and fully manage your Blink devices and account. Its security guidance is correspondingly blunt: only share your account details with trusted individuals.
That has consequences worth thinking through before you hand over the password. A housemate who moves out, a contractor you gave temporary access, an ex-partner — each of them can delete clips, disarm the system and change account settings, and you cannot narrow what they see. What you do get is an audit surface: the account owner can view the phones and devices that have accessed the account in the last 30 days and remove any of them, which immediately logs that device out. Removing a device is not the same as revoking a password, so change the password too.
The one place shared access works in your favor is watching together. Up to five mobile devices on the same Blink account can view live video from a single camera at the same time, which is genuinely more than several competitors allow.
What to Buy for the No-Subscription Path
For a current, non-legacy setup using Local Storage, the shopping list is short and specific, and getting it wrong is the usual reason people end up paying monthly anyway. You need a hub that supports local storage, which rules out the Core, and a drive that meets Blink’s stated requirements.
The Add-On Sync Module 2 is the hub to get: it is the only widely stocked module that takes an ordinary USB drive, and it is the one Blink’s local-storage documentation is written around. Pair it with a Type-A drive between 1 GB and 256 GB, ideally exFAT formatted. Blink sells its own USB flash drive for local video storage for people who would rather not think about formats, though nothing about it is technically special — any drive meeting those requirements works, and you may already own one.
The newer Sync Module XR+ extends range for outdoor cameras, but it stores locally on a microSD card rather than a USB drive, so a drive you bought for a Sync Module 2 will not transfer. Two honest cautions on it: it is a recent release with a thin review history next to the Sync Module 2’s, and its early buyer reception has been noticeably more mixed. If range is not your problem, it is not solving your problem.
Who This Fits, and Who Should Look Elsewhere

- You want clips retained without managing hardware yourself
- You want person detection without a subscription
If the second column describes you, the fix is a different product rather than a different Blink setting. What to Actually Do
For a compatible current, non-legacy Blink setup using Local Storage, consider the Add-On Sync Module 2 and a Type-A USB drive between 1 GB and 256 GB, exFAT formatted, and set it up before you add cameras. That one decision is what separates a Blink system that records for free from one that quietly records nothing. The Sync Module Core in most starter kits cannot store a clip locally at any setting, and no app option changes that.
Then do two things on the day you install it. Set retrigger time before you touch sensitivity, and draw your activity zones — in that order, because sensitivity is the control that costs you real detections along with the false ones. And put a recurring reminder in your calendar to clear the drive. Blink stops writing once free space drops below 375 MB rather than overwriting the oldest clips, so a full drive is a stopped recorder until you intervene, and it will not tell you again after the first alert.
Choose something else if any of three things are true: you need a continuous 24/7 timeline rather than event clips, you need separate logins for a partner, tenant or housemate, or you want person detection without paying monthly. None of those is a setting you have not found yet — they are structural, and the honest answer is a different product. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a subscription to use the Blink app at all?
No. Live View, motion alerts and two-way audio work without a subscription. In a current, non-legacy setup without plan or trial coverage and without supported Local Storage, there is no saved motion clip. Legacy devices and accounts have different cloud entitlements; see Blink’s legacy storage section.
Why did my clips stop saving to the USB drive?
Two likely causes. Either the drive has dropped below 375 MB of free space, at which point Blink stops writing to it entirely rather than overwriting old clips, or that camera gained plan or trial coverage and its clips switched to cloud storage with once-daily Clip Backup. A Basic plan covers one camera; other eligible cameras can continue using Local Storage.
Can I give my partner their own Blink login?
No. Blink has no separate user roles or limited-permission accounts. Everyone signs in with the same credentials and has full control of every device and the account itself.
Does Blink record continuously?
No. It records short clips triggered by motion or by a live view session, with a deliberate gap after each clip during which motion is not recorded. No subscription tier converts it into a continuously recording system.
Can I use any USB drive with the Sync Module 2?
It has to be a Type-A drive between 1 GB and 256 GB with at least 375 MB free, and Blink recommends exFAT formatting. Beyond that, brand does not matter.
How long do locally stored clips stay on the drive?
Until you delete them or the drive fills. There is no rolling window and no automatic expiry, which is the opposite of the cloud side, where clips age out on their own. That is convenient right up until the drive hits its limit and recording stops.
Can two people watch the same camera at once?
